Nov.7 Packed before we went to bed - so all we had to do was roll up the silk inner sheets. Today is the day I decided to stop eating Paludrine malaria pills - my hair falls off - so the chloroquin will have to work alone now. Ate breakfast at a street kitchen - bread with cheese & pepper & strong black coffee with sweet condensed milk in the bottom . (I pull it up with a spoon - candy isn't invented here!!!) It was raining when we left - Goodbye Nha Trang!!!! Drove south & turned right into the land - the sun came out - & the road went uphill. After 6 hours we entered Dalat. Dalat the city of the everlasting spring - It was much bigger than I expected - it doesn't look Vietnamese at all - rather a cross between Norway & Switzerland. The houses are funny looking & the hills planted with tea bushes. Checked in at hotel Mimosa - share the room with a Swiss girl from the bus (Daniela or Dani) - found a restaurant - this place is so full of French people. Nov.8 The mattress is 1/2 inch thin - so I felt the bed bottom very clearly all night. Dani is extremely sporty - we are bit more lazy - but succeed to talk us into a walk down to a waterfall - it was an awful long walk - so I told them that I would wait for them on a well cover 1/2 way. So here I am "all alone in the world" - that's nice! The locals stare - a "ferlang" - in the middle of nowhere. (I got a huge blister on my toe). A gang of road menders are busy filling holes up with asphalt then they wait for a heavy truck coming uphill - to press it down & continue to another crack in the road. In this area the re-education camps were under & after the Vietnam war - so we'd been told - can't leave town in a local bus - will have to take a tourist bus. I spend a lot of hours on my well cover - I became a local tourist attraction - young couples used me as a photographer - so they could have they photos taken at one of the nice views I picked. I had a funny afternoon. I can't recall if the waterfall was any good. We'll leave for Saigon tomorrow. On the way back to Dalat my blister exploded - & I entered town with only one trekking boot on. ! Found a restaurant close to the hotel - met 2 crazy Dutch guys (Fred & Jan) later we sat in the hotel lobby & watched real football (the Americans call it soccer) - funny it was a Danish match - I'm not a football freak so I can't recall who played. |
